£1.5k raised for British Heart Foundation
On Valentine's Day 2022, students from St George’s University of London collected £1,500 for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) during a public performance from Popchoir at St Pancras International.
The undergraduates, who are all members of a BHF fundraising group, had teamed up with Popchoir who treated passers-by to upbeat renditions including Abba’s Waterloo and a medley of numbers from the film Dirty Dancing.
The students were supported by other BHF volunteers and helpers from Funding Circle. Among those helping on the evening was Professor Iain Greenwood, who leads projects investigating how blood vessels relax and contract. He said: “The singers from Popchoir were brilliant and put on a fantastic evening of entertainment.
“We received some incredibly generous donations from the public and that was down to how much they were enjoying the unexpected sight of so much singing and dancing.
Heart and circulatory diseases cause more than 160,000 deaths each year in the UK. The BHF funds research into all heart and circulatory diseases and their risk factors, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
Sarah-Jane Hill, Fundraising Manager for the BHF, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to our volunteers and Popchoir for all their efforts.
“We’ve made immense progress since our inception in 1961, helping to reduce deaths from heart and circulatory diseases in the UK by half, but we must achieve so much more.
“We know we can prevent more people from developing heart and circulatory diseases, that’s why it’s critical we provide the funding so that scientists can discover the next important breakthrough.”
